ERDC takes listeners Beyond the Gates with new radio show – The Vicksburg Post

The US Army Engineers Research and Development Center (ERDC) recently launched its new radio show, “Beyond the Gates: How ERDC Research Affects YOU” on 107.7-FM and Newstalk 1490-AM.

The show is a weekly 45-minute talk show hosted by Annette Kirklin, ERDC’s public affairs specialist. It airs Thursdays at 8:15 a.m. and rebroadcasts at 9:15 a.m. Listeners will also be able to stream it live online at http://vicksburgradio.com/stream-now/ and find archived programs on http://vicksburgradio.com/erdcbtg/.

Each week, Kirklin will interview researchers from one of the seven ERDC labs to describe the impact of their work on the community and region. As one of the world’s leading public engineering and environmental science research and development organizations, ERDC’s impact is far-reaching, and this program will be key in educating listeners about that impact. He will also present the achievements of ERDC in his own neighborhood.

Guests to date have included Jenny Laird, ERDC Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Program Manager with the Environmental Lab; she explains how ERDC’s UAS have been used to monitor levees, wildlife and algal bloom surveys and to help manage landslides at Vicksburg National Military Park and Civil Engineer Dr. Jarrell Smith research at the Coastal Hydraulics Laboratory; he discusses the importance of hopper dredging in protecting beaches and the ecosystems that depend on them.
