KUAF, local public radio station, selected as report for US newsroom for 2022


FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – KUAF, the local branch of National Public Radio for Northwest and Western Arkansas, has been selected as a newsroom partner for Report for America 2022. Report for America is an initiative of the GroundTruth Project and operates from much like PeaceCorps or AmeriCorps – by working with local news agencies to fill gaps in local news reporting by helping these organizations hire and retain journalists. Through this partnership, a new journalist position will be created for KUAF to cover the explosive growth of the region and the impact of this growth on the daily lives of its residents.

KUAF is one of 70 new partners in Report for America’s host newsroom for 2022. Recognizing the gap in coverage of the growth impacts of Northwest Arkansas, KUAF was selected for its new proposal. journalist post to cover economic, environmental, artistic and cultural fields. and the impact on affordable housing of this growth, particularly with regard to the region’s large employer companies. Reports on this growth and its impact will also include reports on rural residents’ access to health care, education, housing, infrastructure and more.

Report for America is a two-year program (with a three-year option) that offers a wide range of benefits to members of its corps of journalists. In addition to paying up to half of journalists’ salaries, it offers continuing education and mentoring by leading journalists, peer networks and memberships in select professional organizations. To help connect body members to the community, they are required to complete a service project, which often includes engaging middle school or high school students in journalism-related activities.

Applications are accepted until January 31; however, those who apply before December 31st will be considered promptly. Members of the Corps will be selected from a highly competitive national competition. Last year, more than 1,800 applications were received. Those hired become employees of their respective newsrooms and will begin their employment on June 1, 2022. The opening of this new journalist position with KUAF will open soon after the new year.

We hope this report highlights the myriad of changes taking place in our listening area, from rural areas to those with exploding populations, ”said Kyle Kellams, KUAF Chief Information Officer.

The selections were made on the basis of which the newsrooms defined the most compelling gaps in coverage and plans to properly deploy body members. In 2022, Report for America will expand to more rural communities, reaching areas hardest hit by newsroom closures, as well as expanding Spanish-speaking positions, helping newsrooms reach out to Latinos. -American growing in their communities. There is increased demand for environmental coverage, and many rhythms – nearly 40% – will cover communities of color, meeting an ongoing demand from newsrooms to provide more equitable coverage.

Along with KUAF, other selected Report for America 2022 newsrooms include daily and weekly newspapers, digital-only news organizations, radio and television stations.
