(WASHINGTON) – There is a new twist in the history of these zebras – still at large in Maryland since their escape two months ago.

Earlier this week, authorities filed criminal animal cruelty charges against Jerry Lee Holly, after three of the zebras escaped from his 300-acre farm in Prince George County, outside Washington.

The charges included depriving the zebras of “necessary substance”, inflicting “unnecessary suffering or pain” and failure “to provide [a] Zebra with sufficient nutritious food and proper shelter while said animal was in its care and care, ”according to legal documents obtained by ABC News.

The charges come after one of the escaped zebras was found dead in a field after being caught in an illegal snare trap, just yards from the compound where Holly’s other 36 zebras are being held, the documents show.

“The animal should have been seen or heard as it died of being caught in the trap if the keeper had cared for the zebras in the fenced enclosure,” the court record said.

Earlier this week, another zebra was found dead, this time in Holly’s zebra enclosure, authorities said. He had been dead long enough to develop rigor-mortis before authorities were called, according to the documents.

These cases are “sufficient circumstantial evidence of negligence to justify a criminal charge,” the record reads.

He noted that the zebras pose a threat to the community and themselves.

“Free-roaming zebras are a public nuisance. Animals are dangerous, and represent a risk for people who approach them, and a risk for drivers on public roads. The fleeing zebras are declared by the county code to be a nuisance and dangerous to public health, safety and welfare, ”the file said.

ABC News reached out to Holly for comment but got no immediate response.

The runaway zebra saga has been confusing. Originally, five zebras were said to have escaped, but the number was later corrected to three.

Now, after the tragic snare trap incident, the number of escaped zebras has dropped to two. The latest effort to capture the two remaining zebras adds yet another twist to the story.

Two zebras were placed in a corral, believed to attract the two runaway zebras with food and company.
